Make Your Own Split Pea Soup Mix or Meals-In-A-Jar/Pouch


Split Pea Soup Starter

Ingredients
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup dried onion, chopped
1/2 cup dried carrot, sliced or chopped
1/4 cup dried celery, chopped
2 cups dried green split peas, about 1 16-ounce bag
1 bay leaf

Directions

  1. In a colander, rinse split peas, sorting out any debris, until water runs clear. Allow split pease to thoroughly dry.
  2. Add all ingredients to a quart-sized Mason jar or Food Saver-type pouch in the order listed, laying the bay leaf on top.
  3. Label and date jar for storage. Add the Recipe to the label for further convenience.
  4. Vacuum Seal jar or pouch.

Tip: To cut the amount of air in a jar and fit more into it, shake the jar (with the lid on) and press the food down gently. if necessary. You’ll be surprised how much will actually fit into the jars.

Storage: Pantry stable for up to 1 year if stored properly. Store in a cool, dry place. You may also re-seal product in a Mylar bag for extended storage, up to 2 years.

Split Pea & Ham Soup

MAKES: 6 servings (2-1/4 quarts)

Ingredients
1 Pantry Pack Split Pea Soup Starter
4 cups ham, pork or vegetable broth
3 cups water
6 ounces Canadian bacon or smoked ham, chopped

Slow Cooker Directions

  1. In a 5-qt. slow cooker, add all ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours or until peas are tender.
  2. Add more water, if needed, to achieve desired thickness.

Stovetop Directions

  1. In a Dutch oven or 5-quart heavy pot with a lid, add all ingredients.
  2. Bring to a boil for 5 minutes.
  3. Reduce heat to medium-low, and partially cover; simmer until peas are soft, 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  4. Add more water, if needed, to achieve desired thickness.
